Review: Does the Bible affirm same-sex relationships?

In just over 100 pages, Rebecca McLaughlin offers a thoughtful, no-nonsense response to one of the most controversial theological questions of our age.
She examines 10 key claims around this question. These are the kinds of claims you have likely heard many people make. For example:
- “Jesus never spoke about same sex relationships”
- “Paul was condemning exploitative relationships not consensual ones”
- “If God is love, he can’t be against relationships of love”
- “We don’t keep the Old Testament food laws, so why would we keep the ones on same-sex sex?”
McLaughlin takes a look at 10 common claims and tests them – both for their inner logic and for their theological accuracy. She is sharp, cuts through much of the fluff, and remains personal throughout. It’s quite the accomplishment.
Her conclusions about each claim seem compelling, all the more because they never feel abstract, cold, or impersonal.
Who wrote it
Rebecca McLaughlin is an author and speaker. As someone who experiences same-sex attraction herself, her writing here is not mere academic. Rebecca is wresting with questions and theology with a warmth I would always hope to find in writing on such a controversial topic.
Why I read it
As part of my research for preaching on sexuality, this book offered an insight into one of the important topics. Plus, I’ve enjoyed every Rebecca McLaughlin book I’ve read.
What I liked
It’s an excellent, punchy book with bite-sized chapters that make it very accessible. It’s impressive for its brevity as it is for its comprehensive addressing of all the key claims.
What I didn’t
No complaints. This was excellent.
Major Takeaway
There was so much to like here. Perhaps my biggest takeaway was simply that it is possible to address difficult questions in a way that is rigorous, warm, academic, thoughtful, and compelling all at once. It typifies her writing style, and this is an excellent example of her ability.
Who should read it
An excellent read for anyone wanting to explore a theological view of same-sex relationships. Rebecca is both punchy and personal.
